What Is a PSMA PET-CT Scan?
An PSMA PET-CT SCAN uses a radiotracer which targets and attaches to the molecule PSMA (prostate specific membrane antigen) in the body. In this scan, a small amount of radiotracer is injected in the body and its distribution is seen in the body using the PET-CT scanner.
What Are the Uses of PSMA PET-CT SCANNING?
A PSMA PET-CT SACN is commonly used for evaluation of patients with prostate cancer. However, PSMA PET-CT SCANNING is a new technology and further new uses are being evaluated.
Can PSMA PET-CT SCANS Tell the Difference Whether Prostate Cacner Is Present?
The final diagnosis of cancer of cancer is almost always based on a biopsy/histopathology. A biopsy involves taking a small piece of abnormal tissue and analysing it under a microscope. Thus the definitive differentiation between infection and cancer is usually made using biopsy. However, imaging findings on PET-CT imaging can however be quite indicative and may help in diagnosis. Recent research has suggested that PSMA PET-CT is almost as good as MRI in detecting prostate cancer.
Do All Prostate Cancer Patients Require a PSMA PET-CT SCAN?
Not all patients will prostate cancer will require a PSMA PET-CT SCAN. All cancers are different and need for PET-CT SCAN will depend on an individual patient’s requirement. Kindly discuss with your treating oncologist for the need and timing of PSMA PET-CT requirement.
What Are the Preparations for an PSMA PET-CT SCAN?
Preparations for a PSMA PET-CT SCAN will depend on the reason the PET-CT SCAN is being done. Detailed individualized instructions for each patient are provided when scheduling for a PET-CT SCAN. Prolonged fasting is however, usually not required.
