What Is Radiosynovectomy Therapy?

Radiosynovectomy is a pain palliative treatment for painful joints.

In radiosynovectomy, a small amount of special type of radioactive medicine is introduced into the painful joint in order to ablate the inflamed synovium (lining of the joint).

Common conditions in which radiosynovectomy may be used:

Inflammatory Conditions:

  • Rheumatoid Arthritis
  • Seronegative arthropathy (e.g. reactive or psoriatic arthritis)
  • Other inflammatory e.g. Lyme disease, Behcet´s disease
  • Hemophilic arthritis
  • Persistent synovial effusion
  • Persistent effusion after joint prosthesis
  • Undifferentiated arthritis (where the arthritis is characterised by synovitis, synovial thickening or effusion)
  • Calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate (CPPD) arthritis

Proliferative conditions

  • Pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS)
  • Lipoma arborescens
