How Does MIBG Therapy Work?
A small quantity of MIBG (meta-iodobenzylguanidine) molecule attached to radioactive iodine-131 is injected intravenously into the patient. The MIBG molecule targets the radiation of Iodine-131 (131I) to the cancer target sites. The delivered radiation then kills the cancer cells.
How Safe Is MIBG Therapy?
MIBG therapy is relatively safe. However, like all treatments it is not free of side effects and benefit of therapy needs to be measured against risk of side effects before giving this treatment. However, overall the side effect profile is quite encouraging.
